Dr. Dirk Smit

Dirk Smit is a theoretical physicist, geoscientist, entrepreneur and former Chief Science Officer of Shell. Over a 30-year international career, he has led major advances in subsurface imaging, gravity gradiometry, energy technology and research strategy, while holding senior leadership roles across Shell’s global R&D organisation. He is now Visiting Professor of Practice at Oxford, Fellow of MIT’s Earth Resources Laboratory, co-founder of GeoRedox and advisor to companies and private equity investors on energy systems and subsurface resource innovation. A Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Dutch National Academy of Engineering, Dirk is a widely sought speaker on the energy transition, geologic hydrogen, and the role of natural resources in the subsurface.
